Valdine Richie MishkinDr. Valdine Ritchie Mishkin is an accomplished cellist and experienced teacher of all ages and levels. Before recently settling in Portland to raise her family, Valdine performed with Houston ensembles Mercury Baroque, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Ballet, and Young Audiences. She maintained a private teaching studio as well as taught at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and served as a Suzuki clinician and youth orchestra sectional coach. Her love of teaching now transplanted to Portland, Valdine teaches students aged 3 through adult at her home studio Suzuki Lake Oswego and with Rose City Music Academy, and serves as strings director at the Catlin Gabel School and chamber music coach with OPACA.

From her solo debut with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at age 10, Valdine has explored a wide range of musical genres and disciplines, from period baroque to large orchestra, from classical and jazz piano to singing opera, from contemporary music premiers to rock/pop concerts with Rod Stewart and Josh Groban. Her focus has finally settled on her preferred genre of chamber music!

Valdine holds a Doctorate and Masters in Music from Rice University as a student of Lynn Harrell and Norman Fischer, a Bachelor of Music from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) as a student of Antonio Lysy, and holds performance diplomas (A.R.C.T.) and teaching certificates in cello and piano from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Performing across Canada, U.S.A. and Europe, Valdine’s development was shaped by such festivals as Tanglewood, Orford, Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada’s National Music Competition Festival, and Schleswig-Holstein Orchestra Academy, by masterclasses with Janos Starker, Aldo Parisot, Zara Nelsova, David Finckel, the Juilliard Quartet, and Arnold Steinhardt, and under the baton of Seiji Ozawa, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Larry Rachleff and Timothy Vernon.
